The Basapuram Summer Storage Tank, a vital water source for Adoni, is in a critical state. Built in 2007, it was designed to supply drinking water to a population that has since grown significantly. Now, due to structural wear and tear, poor repairs, and lack of long-term planning, the tank is unable to meet demand — with only 50% capacity holding and serious leakage concerns.
In recent years, the tank’s wall (bund) has partially collapsed multiple times — once in 2020 and again in 2023. Temporary repairs were done using stone fills instead of proper reinforcement, which has led to recurring failures.
Local officials, including engineers and public health department representatives from Vijayawada, were recently called in to assess the damage. Two urgent proposals are in motion:
- Immediate temporary repairs to avoid crisis in the upcoming summer.
- Long-term restoration to increase capacity and structural stability, possibly taking up to two years.
Despite political blame games, the pressing issue is clear: Adoni residents need reliable drinking water. The priority now is securing funding and starting work immediately before the next dry season intensifies the crisis.
